San Juan Bautista Church: Baroque Art in Alcala de Xivert
Rising above the terracotta rooftops of Alcala de Xivert, the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista is one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in the Valencian Community. This magnificent 18th-century church, with its soaring bell tower and richly decorated interior, is a must-visit for anyone staying in Alcossebre. The town is just 7 km inland from Hotel Sancho III, an easy 10-minute drive or a pleasant 14 km return cycle ride.
A Brief History
Construction began in 1734 on the site of an earlier Gothic church and was completed around 1770. The design is attributed to local master builders working in the ornate Baroque style that was sweeping through eastern Spain at the time. The church survived the Spanish Civil War largely intact, preserving its original altarpieces and decorative stonework.
Architectural Highlights
- The Bell Tower (Campanario): Standing over 60 metres tall, this octagonal tower dominates the skyline. It is one of the tallest bell towers in the Valencian Community and a masterwork of Baroque engineering. The decorative stonework on the upper stages is remarkably intricate.
- The Main Facade: The entrance features a grand Baroque portal with Solomonic columns, carved saints and elaborate floral motifs in local stone.
- Interior: A single nave with side chapels, the interior is adorned with gilded altarpieces, painted vaults and ceramic tile work. The high altar is particularly striking, with its gilded retablo reaching to the ceiling.
- Communion Chapel: A smaller space off the main nave, featuring exquisite tile work and a beautifully carved dome.
The Bell Tower Climb
When open, visitors can climb the bell tower for panoramic views stretching from the Sierra de Irta to the sea. The climb involves narrow stone stairs but the vista from the top is well worth the effort.
